The Open Space Concept
The concept integrates climate adaptation, biodiversity, and social inclusion in a holistic approach. Planting boxes on the sealed surfaces collect rainwater and generate evaporative cooling, helping to mitigate urban heat islands. Large, shade-giving trees along the rows improve the microclimate and enhance air quality.

The deliberate combination of trees, shrubs, and flowering beds creates valuable habitats for insects and birds. Floating islands in the Alster improve water quality while providing new ecosystems.

The green areas are designed to engage all the senses:
• Vibrant flowerbeds, aromatic herbs, and edible plants invite visitors to linger.
• Informational panels provide insights into plant diversity and its benefits.
• An art exhibition exploring the history of the Jungfernstieg adds cultural depth to the experience.

Potential Benefits for Hamburg
The redesigned Jungfernstieg contributes to a healthier urban climate by reducing heat islands and improving air quality. The rainwater retention system relieves pressure on the sewer system and helps prevent flooding. Nature-based areas and green structures promote biodiversity and create habitats for plants and animals.

At the same time, an attractive public space emerges—one that fosters social interaction, education, and cultural exchange.
With this type of forward-thinking concept, Hamburg can further define its identity as a livable and future-oriented city.
